This is really interesting! I have also heard that people have the custom to leave a stone on top of a grave when visiting. This is not particularly for military people’s graves, but for anyone. I think it comes from the ancient times of making sure that the place of the grave stays marked and known for future visits and visitors. It also let’s the family know that someone came to visit the site.
